If you’re expecting to visit an audiologist soon for an appointment, then it’s a good idea to keep in mind a list of things that you should bring to your appointment. To help you out, we’ve prepared a list that you should keep in mind before you attend.

1. Your medical history

Your medical history is going to have quite an impact on the appointment. Many ear and hearing-related conditions can actually stem from old injuries. For instance, a head injury in the past could be the reason why you’re experiencing hearing loss or tinnitus, and health conditions could affect the diagnosis that your audiologist reaches. Make sure you bring any documentation that is relevant to your medical history and ensure that they’re up-to-date records that your audiologist can use to help diagnose your problems and provide you with better support.

2. Medication

Any medication that you’re currently taking should be brought to the appointment. Although uncommon, some medication is known to affect your hearing and your audiologist will want to know all the different types that you’re taking or have taken in the past few months. If you don’t want to bring the medication itself, then you can write down the names of the medication and the dosage that you’ve been prescribed instead.

3. A friend or family member

It’s always nice to have a friend or family member attend with you to give you support. If you’re going for a hearing examination, then it might help to have a friend or family member attend if they can describe some of the hearing loss related experiences they’ve had with you. An extra set of ears will also help you remember certain bits of information that you might forget, and it’s never a bad idea to have someone attend with you to make it a little more comfortable.

4. Your hearing aids

If you already have hearing aids and will be attending the audiologist appointment to get them fixed or maintained, then do remember to bring your hearing aids. If you’re switching audiologists or want to get a different pair of hearing aids, then it’s still a good idea to bring them as well so they can be examined by your audiologist before they make any decisions.

5. A list of requests or questions

Depending on the reason for visiting an audiologist, you’ll want to bring along a list of requests or questions that you plan to discuss with your audiologist. For instance, you might want to discuss your tinnitus, or you might have some requests for the hearing aids that you'll be recommended. Some people have specific requirements such as wanting their hearing aids to be discreet, so it’s important that you write down a list of questions and requests to make things go more smoothly at your appointment.

These are the main things that you should bring to any audiologist appointment. While it’s fine if you forget one or two items, it will ultimately make it easier if you remember all five things.
