Hearing Aid Fitting

Getting your hearing aid fitting done puts you one step closer to the finish line. After selecting the perfect device, you want to ensure it’s programmed to your specific hearing loss and lifestyle needs. A hearing aid has to be both effective and comfortable in its fit, so that different day-to-day sound environments are easy for you to switch between.

What happens during a hearing aid fitting?

The hearing aid fitting may take anywhere from one to two hours, and will consist of a couple different steps. Now that you’ve selected your hearing aids, your audiologist will show you how to insert and remove your device, while ensuring it has a comfortable and complete fit. Next, the audiologist will program the hearing aid to meet your specific hearing loss needs, which also includes making sure the settings are conducive for the different listening environments you encounter daily.

What determines a good fit?

The hearing aid fitting is not invasive, and is all about shaping the device to your ear and programming it correctly. Depending on the style you selected, your audiologist will adjust the device to make sure it fits properly in your ear. This may include making sure the earmold is tightly fitted, or that the piece of a behind-the-ear hearing aid sits comfortably on the back part of your ear. Your audiologist will make the adjustments based on their knowledge and your feedback, so be sure to be open and honest when it comes to how the device feels.

Learning about your device

The hearing aid fitting won’t simply consist of technical aspects; you’ll actually learn quite a bit about your device as well. Your audiologist will show you how to properly care for and maintain your device, including how to use special tools to remove any earwax or debris. You’ll learn how to change the batteries or charge your device, while the audiologist answers any lingering questions you have on functionality.

A common checklist

Because so much happens during a hearing aid fitting, it might be beneficial to bring a checklist with you of things to inquire about. Consider the following questions:

  • Does it feel comfortable inside your ear?
  • If there is an external attachment, does it feel comfortable outside your ear?
  • What activities will require you to take out your hearing aid?
  • Will a hearing aid prevent you from wearing glasses?
  • Are the advanced features of your hearing aid compatible with your home equipment?
  • How long does the battery last before it needs to be changed?

Prepare for your appointment

Aside from jotting down a list of questions so you don’t forget them in the moment, there is very little you need to do to prepare for your hearing aid fitting. Your audiologist will walk you through all the steps and you will be out the door able to enjoy your device before you know it!
